NEWBERRY, S.C. – Here are the four student-athletes who have earned Regional Wrestler of the Week honors in a week with plenty of tightly contested dual action.
This honor is for matches wrestled from January 26-31.
For the rest of the season, one wrestler will be selected from each of the four Super Regions, with the regional wrestlers of the week announced Tuesday. The national wrestler of the week will be selected from those four and announced each Wednesday.
Super Region One
Karl Lightner, Shippensburg
141 lbs. – Jr. – Smethport, Pa.
Lightner, a reigning NCAA qualifier at 133 pounds wrestling at 141 pounds this season, returned to action over the weekend and scored two victories to earn PSAC Wrestler of the Week honors.
His first came against No. 7 Mercyhurst, as he recorded a 15-6 major decision over Joey Miller. Lightner got two early near-fall points and eventually built a 10-2 lead after two periods. A late reversal and a fifth takedown helped net Lightner the major decision.
His biggest win came the next day, in a 4-3 decision over John Marotto, the No. 5-ranked wrestler in Super Region 1. Lightner got a takedown late in the second period to lead, 2-1, after two frames. He led 3-1 after a third-period escape, and was then taken down, but eventually secured another escape for the win.
Lightner is now 4-2 this season.
Super Region Two
Jordan Simpson, Newberry
133 lbs. – So. – Oxford, Ala.
Newberry’s Jordan Simpson went 4-0 at the Super Region II Duals this weekend to lead the Wolves to four wins.
In the opening match of the weekend, the sophomore upset the top-ranked wrestler in the region with a fall at the 4:23 mark. In Friday’s second match, he pinned Emmanuel’s Dylan Carlile in the second period to lead Newberry to a conference win.
On Saturday, he took a 5-3 decision over Anderson’s Derek Bohle, then rolled to a 14-1 major decision over No. 14 Findlay’s Schuyler Phillips.
For the year, Simpson has a 13-5 overall record with five wins by fall.
Super Region Three
Aero Amo, Augustana
184 lbs. – So. – Rapid City, S.D.
Amo won NSIC Wrestler of the Week honors for two big wins for the Vikings.
Ranked 4th nationally, Amo defeated No. 8 Scott VanDeLoo from Minnesota State by a 16-0 technical fall in the first period on Thursday. Amo went on to pin Austin May from MSU Moorhead in the first period on Friday.
With a 2-0 record over the weekend Amo improved his record to 24-1, 17-0 in duals.
Super Region Four
Austin Harris, Western State Colorado
174 lbs. – Sr. – Windsor, Colo.
Harris was named co-Wrestler of the Tournament for the RMAC Conference Tournament after winning the 174 lbs. championship for the Mountaineers.
Harris defeated Colorado State University’s Tarrence Williams in the finals by a 7-5 decision. Harris made the finals by earning a fall in the opening round and defeating Chadron State College’s Caleb Copeland 2-0 in the semifinals.
Selections are made from entries submitted by coaches and SIDs throughout the nation. A group of SIDs representing all four super regions select the wrestlers of the week.
