Feb. 9 Regional Wrestlers of the Week

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Here are the four student-athletes who have earned Regional Wrestler of the Week honors in a week with plenty of tightly contested dual action.

This honor is for matches wrestled from February 1-7.

For the rest of the season, one wrestler will be selected from each of the four Super Regions, with the regional wrestlers of the week announced Tuesday. The national wrestler of the week will be selected from those four and announced each Wednesday.

Super Region One

Nate Ross, Gannon
165 lbs. – Jr. – Egg Harbor City, N.J.

Ross, ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division II Super Region One at 165 pounds, posted a perfect 2-0 record last week. He began the week by knocking off Mercyhurst’s Francis Mizia who is ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II Super Region One and No. 3 in NCAA Division II. Trailing 4-3, Ross took Mizia down with 18 seconds remaining and rode him out for the victory.

He ended the week with a low-scoring 1-0 victory against Seton Hill’s Andrew Doak, recording the only point on a second-period escape, which extended his win streak to four matches, winning seven of his last eight matches.

Ross moved to 18-5 overall and 7-1 in dual action. He leads Gannon in dual victories and ranks second among Golden Knights in overall wins and major decisions (5).

Super Region Two

Stuart Nadeau, UNC Pembroke
285 lbs. – Sr. – Hampstead, N.C.

Nadeau went 4-0 on the week, all by first period pins. With the Braves trailing 18-13 at Coker, Nadeau pinned Austin Akins at 2:42 to grab the team victory (19-18).

He then pinned Anderson’s Ty Williams at 2:03, and needed just 26 seconds to pin Emmanuel’s Dillon Purcell. He also pinned Ferrum’s Tate Dulany in 53 seconds.

Super Region Three

Cole Wilson, Southwest Minnesota State
285 lbs. – Sr. – Faribault, Minn.

Wilson won NSIC Wrestler of the Week and recorded a 2-0 record this past weekend against No. 2 St. Cloud State and Minot State.

Wilson started the weekend with a 4-2 sudden-victory over No. 1 Austin Goergen of St. Cloud State. The win was the first over Goergen and handed the top ranked wrestler his first loss of the season. The heavyweight closed the weekend with a 3-0 decision over Minot State’s Mitch Eull.

Wilson is ranked eighth in the nation at 285 pounds, carries a 12-bout win streak and a 22-3 overall record.

Super Region Four

Martin Ramirez, Adams State
133 lbs. – Sr. – Elk Grove, Calif.

Ramirez won RMAC Wrestler of the Week honors with a pair of 16-0 technical fall victories.

Against the University of Central Oklahoma, Ramirez made quick work of Aaron Hane in the night’s 133 division matchup. Ramirez notched a take-down, three near-falls, and a two-point near-fall to end the match at the 2:26 mark in the first period.

It was déjà vu a night later against Zane Rich of Western State Colorado University. With a trio of near-falls, a take down, and a two-point near-fall Ramirez was awarded another first period 16-0 tech fall. The match was called off at 2:30 to give Ramirez his 15th consecutive victory.

His remarkable streak dates back to his opening match of the Midwest Classic back on Dec. 20th. With a 21-5 overall record and a perfect 8-0 dual mark, Ramirez is currently ranked third in the country in his 133 pound weight class.

Selections are made from entries submitted by coaches and SIDs throughout the nation. A group of SIDs representing all four super regions select the wrestlers of the week.
